APEDA has been given the responsibility of promoting exports from India’s agri-based industry through a policy framework that promotes competitiveness in global markets by facilitating access to foreign markets while providing an environment conducive to investment and promotion of export activities.
The head office is at New Delhi with regional offices in New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Guwahati. In addition there are also 24 Quality Control Laboratories having 38 units located across India.

The Food Standards Laboratory (FSL), New Delhi was established on 8th May 1966 under the Food Safety and Standards Act 1985 (FSSA) as an autonomous body under the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) for conducting tests on food items for microbiological hazards affecting human health or safety.[1]
In order to promote export of processed foods from India it has been decided by Ministry Commerce & Industry of Government Of India vide their letter No Dated 28/10/2017 that “Food Products Export Development Authority” shall be renamed as “Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority”.[2][3]
